Huron River Greenway is CLOSED

Due to a decision in the Supreme Court of Ohio, Erie MetroParks is being compelled to begin the purchase of portions of the Greenway with abutting property owners.

Remember: THE ENTIRE TRAIL IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. At this time, to enter any portion of the trail is to do so AT YOUR OWN RISK. If you able to observe anyone damaging Park property or physically attempting to block the trail by means other than the park-controlled gates; please inform Erie MetroParks rangers at 419-621-4220 (M-F, 8AM to 5PM) or 419-625-7951 at all other times, or the Erie County Sheriff at 419-625-7951. Use 911 for emergencies only.

Reasons to be Hopeful

Things are finally settling down concerning these recent events. The temporary (and it is temporary) closure of the Greenway was a wise decision.

(This portion of commentary removed under threat of legal action by attorneys of the property owners, so much for free speech...)

Any property owner who decides to dig holes in the trail surface, dismantle structures, etc., is still damaging park facilities as much as if it were done to any other Erie MetroParks area. In addition; while vandalism to the trail surface that occurred in 2003 probably could not have been blamed on any specific owners; now, the property owner of record immediately adjacent to such an event would become a prime suspect or accessory in the vandalism.

The abutting property owners, individually and collectively, must be careful what they wish for. If they take this opportunity to stick it to Erie MetroParks or try for a big payday out of it; they run the risk of losing whatever sympathy they might have gained in public opinion. That good will would transfer immediately to Erie MetroParks' side.

The Greenway will re-open; it is only a matter of when. Now, all Greenway supporters, trail users and advocates everywhere must help. Please consider a generous donation in the name of the Huron River Greenway to either Erie MetroParks or the Friends of Erie MetroParks (a "501-C3" non-profit organization supporting all Erie MetroParks facilities). Consider joining the Friends. We all must help; I have just sent a check, I hope you will as well.

Let's hope we can reach an equitable solution with all involved.

Please continue to check this site, and the Erie MetroParks web site, for updates as they become available.
