Huron River Greenway Page

Burnout

You might have noticed that I have not been keeping up with this site much lately, or the Ohio Rail Trail List. I apologize for this; I am still a believer in the Greenway and that everything that has happened will be for the best. But after 20 years of advocacy and working for a Huron River Greenway; I am just burned out with it all. While it has been so nice to see a part of the Greenway opened again; it just isn't the same as it was. Erie MetroParks officials assure me they have made progress and tell me a number of adjoining property owners have entered into agreements with the park district; some we would not have expected. I still need to hear some good news!

I wanted to go to New York City to attend the opening of the new High Line trail this week as a representative of "our trail." I was not able to do it; and not just because money was short right now. If people on the west side of Manhattan could work it out, it can certainly be done here! The Greenway needs to be opened all the way again, I do not know how long that will take.

I am still for the Huron River Greenway, I am just not going to worry about it as much.

A portion of the Huron River Greenway is OPEN

A portion of the Huron River Greenway, between the DuPont Marsh parking lot and the gate at Riverview Drive at Franklin Flats has been open since July 10, 2008. This is most of the portion that was first opened in 1999, includes the Cedar Bay and Kara Deering bridges and overlook, and is about 1.2 miles in length. Come on out and visit the Greenway!

Please consider a generous donation in the name of the Huron River Greenway to either Erie MetroParks or the Friends of Erie MetroParks (a "501-C3" non-profit organization supporting all Erie MetroParks facilities). Consider joining the Friends.

THE REMAINDER OF THE TRAIL IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. At this time, to enter any portion of the trail other than the section currently open is to do so AT YOUR OWN RISK. It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that trail users stay out of these designated areas. Trail users seen anywhere but the section that has been re-opened can expect to be called in to law enforcement.

If you able to observe -anyone- damaging Park property or physically attempting to block the trail by any means other than the park-controlled gates; please inform Erie MetroParks rangers at 419-621-4220 (M-F, 8AM to 5PM) or 419-625-7951 at all other times, or the Erie County Sheriff at 419-625-7951. Use 911 for emergencies only.

Anyone who decides to dig holes in the trail surface, dismantle structures, etc., is still damaging park facilities as much as if it were done to any other Erie MetroParks area.

This is my site. While I may ask Erie MetroParks for assistance to check facts, they do not dictate what I put here. For information on the Huron River Greenway itself, please contact Erie MetroParks.

Please continue to check this site, and the Erie MetroParks web site, for updates as they become available.

Please contact Erie MetroParks or send an email to me at the address below. Thanks for visiting! Steven Myers.
